Crochet pattern for warm and soft mittens or fingerless mittens in 2 sizes :  S/M and M/L.

The smallest size fits an average size ladies hand.

The larger size fits a large ladies hand size or average size men’s hand.

Yarn :
Hobbii Tweed Delight, 85 % wool & 10 % acrylic & 5 % viscose, 50g/100m/109yds, 27 Wisteria Bloom or 20 Chai Latte, 2 (3) balls.
Fingerless mittens : 160 (200)m yarn needed
Mittens : 190 (260)m yarn needed

Crochet hook : 4,5 mm & 5 mm

Gauge : 17 sc x 18 rounds worked in spirals to measure 10 x 10 cm or 4 x 4 in using 4,5 mm hook size. (sc sts are always worked on RS, without turning).
Adjust your hook size if necessary.

PATTERN INFO

 – Pattern construction :
Start with the ribbed  cuffs, worked in rows. Fold cuff double and close, next turn your work a quarter turn. Continue with the hand, worked ‘in the row ends’ of the cuffs. Next create the thumb opening while finishing the upper hand section. End with the thumbs. Both (fingerless) mittens are identical.

Using 4,5 mm hook :
Row 1
: RS :  12 (14)ch, 1sc in second ch from hook, 1sc in each next ch across, turn.

Fold cuff double placing first row and last row tog, RS on the inside, close with slst. Turn your work to RS again, do not cut yarn.

HAND

– Always work in rounds on RS.
– Do not turn.
– Work in spirals, do not close rounds.
– Place a stitch marker in first st of each new round and replace it when starting a new round. (or use contrast thread).

Using 5 mm hook :
Round 15 (17) : RS : (the first sc has already been worked at end of previous round), work 30 (32)sc to foundation ch, next work 5 (6)sc in these ch (1sc in each ch).

Rounds 16-19 (18-21) : RS : 36 (39)sc.
Round 20 (22) : RS : 14 (16)sc, sc2tog, 18 (19)sc, sc2tog.

THUMB

Thumb is worked in the 9 (10) missed sts + 5 (6) chains. You will notice there are 2 extra stitches visible on both sides between the missed sts and the chains. These are used and counted as sts in the first round !

Using 5 mm hook :
Round 1 : RS : Rejoin yarn with slst (does not count as a st) on the side where 9 (10) missed sts are, next : work 9 (10)sc in these missed sts, sc2tog in extra sts, 5 (6)sc (worked in ch), sc2tog in extra sts.

Round 2 : RS : 9 (10)sc, sc2tog, 3 (4)sc, sc2tog.
– total : 14 (16)sc

FINGERLESS MITTENS

Rounds 3-7 (3-8) : RS : 14 (16)sc.

Try your mitten to check if thumb is long enough. If not, add one or more rounds.

At the end of Round 7 (8) : RS : 1slst in each of next 2sc.

Cut yarn and fasten off.
Weave in end.

Make a second identical mitten.

MITTENS

Rounds 3-9 (3-10) : RS : 14 (16)sc.

Try your mitten on and check if the thumb is now halfway your fingernail. If so, continue. If your thumb is too long, simply unravel one or more rounds. If the thumb is too short, add one or more rounds.

Round10 (12) : RS : [5 (6)sc, sc2tog] x 2.

Round 11 (13) : RS : [4 (5)v, sc2tog] x 2.

Make a second identical (fingerless) mitten.

FINISHING

Weave in all ends.
Block your mittens gently in shape and allow to dry naturally.
